‘I know what’s right’ – Lucas Bergvall defends his decision to join Tottenham amid criticism

Lucas Bergvall has defended his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur instead of Barcelona in January, insisting that he wants to keep his head down and focus on performing for Djurgårdens IF.

Bergvall joined fellow Swede, Dejan Kulusevski, in signing for Tottenham this winter, with the Lilywhites agreeing on an initial £8.5m fee with Djurgårdens IF (Daily Mail).

Football.London also reported that Bergvall received five different offers before choosing Tottenham as his next destination, with Barcelona also showing interest in the 18-year-old.

It is said that Djurgårdens IF even have a sell-on clause inserted into the deal, and will continue some kind of partnership with Tottenham that could include the exchange of players in the future.

Lucas Bergvall is unbothered by Tottenham criticism

SportWitness report that Bergvall was criticised in the Spanish press for his decision to choose Spurs over Barcelona, but the midfielder is unbothered by the speculation.

He told Sportbladet: “It’s not something I spend a lot of time on. They can write and say what they want. I know what’s right. I try not to put too much energy into it.”

When asked if the criticism could come from a place of jealousy, he added: “That can be the case, absolutely. I don’t know.”

Finally, Bergvall opened up on the transfer process and his plans for the next six months: “There was a lot going on in my head in general, a lot of speculation back and forth on social media. A lot of people wondered, but it’s nice that everything has settled down and that I can focus only on Djurgården.

“It’s nice to get the last six months here with Djurgården and hopefully win a cup. I try not to think too much about injuries, if it happens, it happens.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Criticising a teenager because he decided to join another club is absolutely ridiculous. Bergvall clearly sees Tottenham as a better path for his career as Postecoglou is laying the groundwork for young players to get a chance in the starting XI. Sometimes, the egos attached to big clubs like Barcelona can get in the way of that.
