Tottenham Hotspur recorded their biggest win under Ange Postecoglou this afternoon in the Premier League as they dismantled Aston Villa by four goals to nil.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:
Top Four in Tottenham’s Hands
Tottenham are now just two points behind Aston Villa in the race for fourth, and the Lilywhites have a game in hand on their Champions League rivals. However, both teams still have to play the top three this season so I think there will be a whole lot of ups and downs between now and the final day.
Best Game in a Long Time
That was undoubtedly Tottenham’s best game in a long time and the second half was in with a shout of being Ange Postecoglou’s best-ever as Spurs boss. For the first time in weeks, you could see the trademark patterns of play from Spurs, building from the back and inviting the press only to break the lines and pounce. Even in the first 45, although the passes in the final third were a little off, the Lilywhites controlled long portions of the game. And with Villa playing in mid-week, there came a point in the second half where Spurs were able to just run away from their opponents.
Brennan Johnson Rewarded
Brennan Johnson deserves a shout-out this afternoon. He may have worried about earning a reputation as a super-sub after coming off the bench to record goals and assists of late, but he proved today that he can do it from the starting XI too. He was the shining light in attack in the first half and then grabbed his well-deserved goal in the second 45. Full of pace and running, it was nice to see someone actually take their marker on one-vs-one for once. Well done, Brennan!
Top Five for Sonny
Heung-min Son has now moved into the top five Tottenham goalscorers of all-time! Son is joint-fifth with Cliff Jones on 159, now behind only Martin Chivers (174), Bobby Smith (208), Jimmy Greaves (268), and Harry Kane (280). Could Sonny end up in the top three?

Micky Van de Ven Injury
The one downside to this afternoon’s 4-0 thrashing was the injury to Micky Van de Ven. It was a real shame because he was probably Man of the Match up until that point. I do worry about his explosive style of play and how it will cope with regular Premier League and European football, but hopefully this is just a knock. As a side note, Radu Dragusin performed excellently after coming on.
Bentancur’s Revenge on Cash
A little honourable mention. We all saw that little foul on Matty Cash at the end, Rodrigo.
