Postecoglou comments on the notion of revenge against Matty Cash for Spurs

Ange Postecoglou dismisses the notion that Tottenham will be out for revenge on Matty Cash this weekend when they take on Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Aston Villa right-back is public enemy number one in Tottenham ahead of Sunday’s clash, with Cash having caused two long-term injuries to Spurs players in recent seasons.

First, a late Cash challenge ended Matt Doherty’s season just as he was getting back to his best form, then the Villa right-back chopped down Rodrigo Bentancur to sideline him earlier this season.

Some Spurs fans have been dying to see the likes of Cristian Romero seek revenge on the Aston Villa star, but Ange Postecoglou insists that Tottenham are concentrated fully on winning the game.

The Lilywhites go into the match five points behind Aston Villa this weekend, albeit with a game in hand, and a win at Villa Park could go a long way to securing Champions League football next season.

Postecoglou not interested in Matty Cash revenge

When asked ‘Some fans are looking for some kind of revenge against Matty Cash for his challenge on Bentancur, how do you stop the team from getting carried away with that?’ Postecoglou said (Football London): “I wouldn’t place sole ownership on the fans, it seems like you’re fuelling that a bit yourselves!

“No interest mate. For us, the challenge is to face a really good team with really strong home form and beyond that you’d be surprised about how little that stuff infiltrates what we do and sort of our motivations for a game of football.

“If anything, they’re the type of things where you hope that as you mature and develop as a team become less and less important or a focus.

“When you’re clutching at those kinds of things, you’re losing sense of what’s important. What’s important for us is to be at our best against a very good football team and try to get a result.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I completely agree with Ange. If you really want revenge, then you get it by winning the game. As soon as you start thinking about leaving one on Matty Cash, you take your eye off what really matters.
