23-year-old Tottenham defender admits he has ‘big goals’ for next season

Emerson Royal has admitted that he has big goals for next season and aims to start his preparation for the next campaign even before pre-season.

After struggling to adapt to the demands of the right wing-back role in Antonio Conte’s first few months in charge, Emerson enjoyed a strong finish to the season.

The 23-year-old showed signs of adjusting to the demands of Premier League football and played a valued part in helping Spurs to clinch the fourth spot.

However, despite his strong end to the campaign, reports indicate that he is one of the players who is expected to leave the North London club this summer (The Times).

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, Spurs plan to replace the Brazilian with Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, who will be used in tandem with Matt Doherty at right wing-back next season.

However, Emerson does not appear to be too fussed about the speculation over his future, with the Tottenham man insisting he has set his aims even higher for the next season.

He said on Brazilian podcast Podpah (07/06/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness): “In fact, I had a dream of playing for Barcelona, right?

“Today, of course, I admire many, many clubs. Several clubs. Let’s put a list of five, six top clubs: City, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, big clubs that, of course, everyone wanted to play in a team, apart from Tottenham, which I play. But a specific team like that, not today.”

“I’m enjoying the holidays but I’m already thinking about the next season. Because as I say, I’m going to do my best now this season because I have big goals this season. So preparation doesn’t start when pre-season starts, but before.

“So I’m thinking a little. Of course, obviously, I’m going to enjoy my holiday, enjoy it, take a break from football because it’s important. But when the time is right I will be fully prepared.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe Emerson has the attributes to be a decent right-back in a back four in the Premier League. I would not be surprised if a few English clubs show interest in him this summer.

However, the 23-year-old does not offer enough going forward to play as a wing-back in Conte’s system, which is why Spurs have no choice but to cash in on him this summer.
