24-year-old signs new two-year deal at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has signed a new two-year contract at the club.

The 24-year-old academy graduate has spent time away from north London in recent seasons having joined Swedish club Degerfors during the second half of 2021 campaign, where he helped them retain their status in the top flight.

Whiteman returned to Degerfors once again for the duration of the 2022 Swedish Allsvenskan season to pick up further first-team footballing experience.

With Hugo Lloris having been sidelined for the next few weeks with a knee injury, fellow academy product Brandon Austin has stepped up to be Fraser Forster’s understudy, with Whiteman providing cover as third-choice goalkeeper.

His contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but will now remain in N17 until 2025.

Whiteman joined the club’s academy at the age of 10 and made his first team debut as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 Europa League win over Ludogorets in November, 2020.

A statement on the official Tottenham website read: “We are delighted to announce that goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has signed a new contract with the Club that will run until 2025.

“The lifelong Spurs fan, 24, returned from a second loan spell at Swedish side Degerfors IF in December 2022 where he made 21 appearances, helping them to fend off relegation from the Allsvenskan.

“Alfie rose through our Academy and made his First Team debut for us in our Europa League win over Ludogorets in November, 2020. He has also been capped by England at youth level.”

With Lloris currently sidelined a good few weeks and uncertainty over the goalkeeping structure at the club beyond next season, it makes sense for Tottenham to have Whiteman providing cover for the likes of Forster and Austin.

Another loan spell will likely happen next season, given the prospect he will likely be fourth choice when everyone is fit and available.
