Alderweireld speaks on Spurs’ future

Toby Alderweireld has told Sky Sports News he is happy at Tottenham despite difficulties in negotiations over a new deal.It was revealed last December that Toby was in discussions with the Spurs hierarchy over a new improved deal.

Toby’s lawyer publicly encouraged Spurs to offer the Belgian a new deal with his current contract to expire in 2019, but Mauricio Pochettino said the player told him he was content.

Alderweireld  told Sky Sports News: “I had a good conversation with the manager. I told him I’m focused on football, to keep my game up and help the team.

“That’s all I can do. You can see I’m happy there, and I try to help the team, and that’s the way I always play football.

He was asked if had been offered a new deal and he replied: “No, like I said, I am focused on football. The rest, I don’t know, we will see about that.”

Our back-three of ex-Ajax stars have been in fine form this season with new signing Davinson Sanchez adding more steel to a solid pair of Alderweireld and fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen.

Super Jan, should he play in both qualifiers, will become Belgium’s most capped player. Alderweireld said of his club and country team mate: “We’ll be very proud of him if he achieves this. He will be very proud for himself too. It will be a great honour. Hopefully we can celebrate it.”

It is concerning that he has not yet been tied down to a new deal but it is encouraging to see him state that he is happy at he club and hopefully something will be agreed sooner rather than later.
