3-7-0 – worth a shot?

Everyone agrees that our full-backs and strikers have been hopeless this season – so why not play without them? We have the centre backs and we have the midfielders…why not put out a formation that includes our 11 most in-form players?

Onto the specifics. Our defence would be Kaboul, Dawson and Vertonghen. Younes has a lot of experience playing as a right back, so he could cover when the opposition attack down their left. He would be ably supported by Lennon tracking back. Similarly, Super Jan has a lot of experience in the left back slot, so could cover there with the support of Holtby/Sigurdsson. We then have 3 dominant and powerful players to control offensive and defensive set pieces. Sandro could fill in at centre back if any of the 3 are dragged out to the wings.

The midfield would be interesting to say the least. The personnel would probably comprise Bale, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Holtby, Dembele, Sandro and Carroll. The latter three of the above would sit in front of the defence, and dictate the tempo (as they do at the moment, w/o Carroll). The front 4 would have more free roles, able to drop deep and get on the ball to make chances. We would have potent goalscoring threat and a good balance throughout the team. What’s more, the average age of the aforementioned players is about 24, leaving super potential for the future.

The other option of course is to buy a striker. But Levy wouldn’t allow that! It’s a betrayal of his personal principles.

AVB is an exciting and technical manager, and he could definitely make this system work effectively. It certainly would eliminate the possibility of 0-0 draws!
