Jose Mourinho had some positive words to say about Japhet Tanganga after the youngster’s display against Manchester City last night in the Premier League.
Much like his debut against Liverpool last campaign, Tanganga was thrown in at the deep end, appearing for the first time in the Premier League this season against City.
The English defender was certainly given a tough task too, marking the likes of Raheem Sterling over on the Man City left-wing.
Despite being a central defender by trade, Tanganga started at right-back to cover for the absent Serge Aurier against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Many would assume that there would be few positives to take from a defensive performance that saw City score three, but Tanganga was certainly a shining light.
Mourinho claimed that the 20-year-old had a couple of awkward moments in the second half, but overall put in a very accomplished and complete performance against a high-quality opposition team.
The Spurs head coach said (Tottenham official): “Japhet did very well.
“He’s a positive – a young guy, an Academy guy, a Club guy coming into the game and the game, of course, not easy.
“I didn’t feel that he had any problems and that he was in control against good players and a good team, and when the team is not physically well, then minute after minute, you start opening up spaces, not the same recoveries from the midfield players or the centre-backs.
“He had a few situations in the second half, but a complete performance from the kid.”
