‘A different team’ – Paul Merson predicts score for Tottenham vs Wolves

Paul Merson has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur will find it challenging to break down Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon, despite tipping the home side to take all three points.

Tottenham started their campaign with a convincing 4-1 thrashing of Southampton, who took our point of them last season and followed their win against the Saints with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge despite not being at their best.

Wolves, on the other hand, have endured a rough start to their campaign even though their performances have been impressive. They lost their opening fixture by a 2-1 scoreline to Leeds United and were held to a 0-0 draw by Fulham last time out.

This afternoon, the north Londoners take to the field against Bruno Lage’s side in a lunchtime kick-off with both teams looking to better their previous result, with the Spurs fans expecting nothing less than a victory.

However, Merson believes things are not as clear-cut as people believe them to be when it comes to Tottenham.

The former England international highlighted how Conte’s side were lucky against Chelsea and they still have a long road ahead of them.

In his Sportskeeda column, Merson wrote: “A lot of people have said Tottenham Hotspur will be a different team this season, but I believe they still have a long way to go. They were lucky against Chelsea as Harry Kane’s late equaliser meant the result papered over the cracks as they were outplayed for large parts of the game.”

“That said, I still think they’ll beat Wolves, but it won’t be a straightforward result based on what I saw from Spurs last weekend. With Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski, they’ve got enough individual brilliance up front to unlock Wolves’ backline, so I’m going for a 2-1 Tottenham win.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Despite their disappointing start, the Wanderers cannot be underestimated in any case, especially after the improvements they have made to their squad. Players like Matheus Nunes, Goncalo Guedes, Nathan Collins and Hee-chan Hwang have significantly bolstered their ranks.

Even with that, Tottenham would still be expected to get three points over the line. While Lage’s team would pose a stern challenge, beating them would be the best way to follow up on the result Spurs got against Thomas Tuchel’s team in their last league clash.
