‘A few approaches’ – Centre-back addresses Spurs January speculation

Jean-Clair Todibo, who was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in January, has admitted that a few clubs wanted to sign him during last month’s transfer window.

It was widely reported at the start of January that Todibo was Tottenham’s top centre-back target (TEAMtalk) but Ange Postecoglou’s men instead secured Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

It was explained by 90 min towards the end of January that while Spurs were keen on signing the Frenchman, they were put off by Nice’s €60m (£51.2m) asking price and thus decided to turn their attention to the Romanian instead.

The outlet claimed that the 24-year-old still very much remains on the radar of the Lilywhites, who could reignite their interest in the Ligue 1 star next summer.

Jean-Clair Todibo was not distracted by Spurs interest

Todibo himself has now addressed the speculation over his future, insisting that while there were some approaches, he was keen on staying at Nice and helping the club qualify for the Champions League.

The centre-back told CanalPlus (as relayed by Maxifoot) about the January rumours: “There were quite a few approaches this winter. I heard some names of clubs, but I wasn’t really focused on them. I need to concentrate on what I’m doing and on what’s concrete.

“The concrete thing for me right now is Nice. If I have to leave this summer, I’d like to leave with something big. Managing a Champions League qualification and leaving would be a real thrill.”

That final line is a clear admission from Todibo that he wants to make a step up to a bigger club in the summer. However, I doubt Tottenham would be interested in the 24-year-old any longer, now that Posteocoglou has three top centre-backs at his disposal.
