“A great opportunity” – Emery on Arsenal’s chance to close gap on Spurs

Tottenham fell to their second Premier League defeat in four days after they lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The loss effectively put Tottenham out of the title race and right back in the scramble for the top four positions.

This result also puts massive pressure on Tottenham going into the North London derby on Saturday. With Arsenal thrashing Bournemouth 5-1, they now find themselves just four points behind Spurs.

An Arsenal win on Saturday would thus put the Gunners in the driving seat to finish above Spurs as the Lillywhites still need to travel to the Etihad as well as Anfield.

After Arsenal’s victory over Bournemouth yesterday, Unai Emery has spoken about the big opportunity Arsenal have to close the gap on Spurs. While he admitted that beating Spurs at Wembley would be a tough ask, he said that Arsenal players were looking forward to the test.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Emery said, “It’s a big motivation, but we were speaking to the players about it. We need to take the opportunity today, and after that we can have a great opportunity on Saturday. They are still ahead of us in the table, and it’s difficult to win there, but it’s a good test.”

“I’m going to watch the match back, and Tottenham’s, and after that I will decide our gameplan for Saturday with every player,” he said. “We need the players in the first 11 and on the bench, and a big commitment between every player to help us.

“If we can play with a big performance, I want every player to help us once we make these decisions.”
