‘A lacking player like me’ – Sonny sends emotional thank you to Spurs fans

Heung-min Son gave an emotional and guilty thank you to the Tottenham faithful yesterday after he won the goal of the season award.

While Sonny has grown accustomed to getting stronger and stronger with each passing season in North London, this has been a difficult campaign for the South Korean.

Despite winning the Golden Boot last season and arguably raising the bar for himself, Son came up short this time around, netting just 10 Premier League goals in 35 games so far (TransferMarkt).

Considering he managed 23 goals and nine assists last season to share the Golden Boot with Mo Salah, it makes sense that Son is disappointed in his return in 2022/23 (TransferMarkt).

After winning the goal of the season award, Son spoke to the Spurs fans in the stadium yesterday and thanked them for their support all season, but his words were heavy with guilt.

He said (20/05/23 SpursPLAY): “I’m always grateful to the Tottenham fans.

“I feel it every moment, every week, every game; a simple ‘thank you’ is not enough to express my gratitude.

“It’s shameless, but I ask for your support during our final game.

“Thank you always for having supported a lacking player like me this season.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

The fans who gave Son a load of stick this season are so fickle. How can you demand loyalty from players like Son, who could have easily pushed for a bigger move in his career, but then not show any loyalty or kindness in return? He will be back next season under an attacking coach.
