Steffen Freund has waxed lyrical about Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg and admitted that he has been impressed with the way in which the midfielder has progressed since his younger days.
Freund was very much a fan-favourite among the Spurs faithful during his time at the club and Hojbjerg also appears to be well on his way there, if he has not achieved that status already.
Despite being at the club for only six months, the Dane has already become one of the most important players in the Tottenham side and a leader on the pitch.
Freund has followed the 25-year-old’s career closely as it was in the Bundesliga that Hojbjerg first rose to fame, making his debut for Bayern Munich at just 17 years of age.
The former Tottenham man admitted that the Denmark international has evolved considerably as a player over the last two years.
The 51-year-old, who now works as a pundit for, RTL, Nitro, the DFL (Bundesliga) and DFB (German FA), stated that it is a shame Spurs fans are not in the stadium to show their appreciation for Hojbjerg in person.
Freund told Tottenham’s official website: “I love to see his (Hojbjerg’s) quality.
“He’s improved so much without the ball and works so hard, and that’s why the supporters love him, it’s just a pity they are not there in the stadium to see his performances and to be able to show that appreciation.
“The Premier League is perfect for him. He has a fantastic attitude, works so hard and he will give everything to win, a little bit like me in the past!
“He spent four years at Southampton and now we see the best of him at Spurs, using all his experience.
“It’s great to see and he’s such an important player for Spurs. I’ve been really impressed with Pierre.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Hojbjerg looks set to be a mainstay in the base of the Spurs midfield for the next five to six years. I believe we could potentially look back in a few years time on his acquisition as one of the best bargains in the club’s recent history.
