‘A long way to go’ – Postecoglou opens up on the long-term Tottenham project

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur might need a few more transfer windows in order to build a squad that can challenge for all four trophies.

Spurs’ hopes of ending their trophy drought this campaign were handed a huge blow last week by Manchester City, who progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup at the Lilywhites’ expense.

While Tottenham were missing a few key players for the clash, their lacklustre display perhaps exposed the weaknesses in their squad, with Pep Guardiola’s men dominating proceedings for much of the encounter.

Spurs have made significant reinforcements to the squad in the two windows since Postecoglou arrived at the club and the Australian admitted that the side’s performances in the second half of the campaign will indicate how far they have progressed

When asked if Tottenham now have a squad which can compete on four fronts, the 58-year-old said (via Football.London): “It is hard to say. I think there is real growth still in this group, I really do and that’s why this second half of the year will be really important for us to see how much we can push these guys to finish the season strongly.

“If we do get a really strong finish then there are a lot of guys who don’t forget are probably in their first or second year of Premier League football so there should still be real growth there, which will help us build the squad we want.

“I still think there is a way to go. When I look at where we’re at compared to where we need to be in the next year or two, there is still a way to go. That’s why every window will be important for us. If we can improve the quality of the squad and also develop our players then we’ll get to that point quicker but there is still a long way to go.”

While Tottenham made two significant additions to the squad early this month in the form of Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, some Spurs fans will perhaps be disappointed if those two turn out to be the only arrivals of the window.

Postecoglou thinks Spurs are getting stronger by the window

However, Postecoglou insisted he is pleased with the business that has been done since the squad is now stronger now than it was at the start of the month.

When asked about Tottenham’s January business, he said: “Obviously we had a couple of clear objectives and part of that was to do it early. I can see already that Timo has played a couple of games and Radu has settled in well, so you can see if we were signing them now they’d need a week or two to get up to speed.

“Every window, you measure it on whether we’re coming out stronger than we went into it and I think we are. We definitely benefit from Radu and Timo both short term and long term, and that’s the measure of any window, and we haven’t lost anyone significant in that perspective. We’ve got a couple of good loans out of it, Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine to Plymouth, so it’s been a productive window for us.”

When one looks at the cumulative business that Spurs have done last summer and this January, there is no doubt that we have made some big strides. We are arguably just two or three top-quality additions away from having a squad which can challenge on multiple fronts.
