‘A lot of work to do’ – Harry Kane opens up on what Spurs must improve on

Harry Kane has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur have struggled to cope when they have been put under any sort of pressure for the majority of the campaign.

The campaign continues to go from bad to worse for Tottenham, who lost 3-1 to Brentford on Saturday in their final home game of the season.

The match took a familiar pattern, with the Lilywhites producing glimpses of some enterprising play, only to collapse when the Bees put their defence under pressure.

That is an issue that Antonio Conte himself identified, stating back in February that the team collapses when they feel pressure (talkSPORT), that is certainly an assessment that Harry Kane agrees with.

The striker told The Evening Standard after Saturday’s loss: “You have to somehow be able to win games even when you’re not at your best.

“We’re struggling to hang into games when there’s a little bit of pressure against us. That was what happened there and we weren’t able to recover from it.”

The 29-year-old admitted that the players took their foot off the gas in the second half, thus allowing Thomas Franks’ men to come back into the game.

He said: “First half we probably should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up, we weren’t clinical enough in those moments. In the Premier League, you can be punished.

“We’re disappointed with the way we came out in the second half. We didn’t play with the same intensity or energy and we got punished for it.

“That’s been the story of our season, there have been some good halves and some bad halves as well and that was on show.”

The England captain said that the campaign has been a tough one for the players, admitting that the side has been nowhere near as consistent as they should have been.

Kane continued: “It’s been a tough season for a lot of the players. It’s never easy playing at this highest level and performing week in and week out. That’s what separates the best teams from the teams where we are now.

“I’ve said all season long we have to show more consistency but it’s easier said than done. There’s still a lot of work to do and all we can do now is prepared for the final game of the season.”

Even though the players would want to finish the season with some wins, it is only natural that the intensity would drop, given that we now have nothing to play for.

It is clear that everyone at the club just wants the campaign to end so that they can start with a clean slate next season under a new manager.
