‘A performance with mistakes’ – Jose Mourinho reacts to Tottenham win over Villa

Tottenham Hotspur have moved up into fifth place above Sheffield United after defeating Aston Villa 3-2 today, also moving within a point of Chelsea in fourth.

However, while it was an entertaining watch for the neutral, it was far from a stellar performance for Tottenham away from home.

The Lilywhites looked leaky at the back from the first minute until the last, particularly up against Aston Villa’s tall players from set-pieces.

Jack Grealish carved a number of Spurs defenders apart all game, with Serge Aurier and Toby Alderweireld two of his victims.

Having said that, Spurs did create chances extremely well today, even if they were sub-par to say the least at tucking them away.

Dele Alli will wonder how he wasn’t on the scoresheet today and Heung Min Son should have wrapped things up long before the 93rd-minute.

Jose Mourinho claimed it was a win with mistakes in his press conference after the game, but said there were positives to take.

He said (Football London): “It was a performance with mistakes. A performance with a bad start, a bad collective start but a performance with fantastic mentality, great personality, great desire to win and fantastic football.

“I think it is the match since I arrive when we created the most chances. We had so many chances to score. Not just the chance that arrive occasionally but the chances we really build and work for and beautiful football. So I am obviously very, very pleased with the victory but I would now be complaining if the result was 2-2 after we missed so many chances, especially in the second half. Too much football just to score a goal in minute 94.”
