‘A pity’ – Conte comments on ‘very strange’ performances from Spurs star

Antonio Conte has labelled Harry Kane’s struggles in front of goal for Tottenham as ‘very strange’ but is happy with the England captain’s performances overall.

The 28-year-old is still stranded with just one Premier League goal in 13 appearances for Spurs this season.

He lined up again in the side’s 3-0 win over Norwich City on Sunday but couldn’t get on the scoresheet again despite being presented with a handful of good opportunities.

Kane attempted an audacious chip over Canaries goalkeeper Tim Krul which sailed just wide of the post, while an effort from distance in the second-half was pushed away by the Dutch goalkeeper.

He also headed a Ryan Sessegnon cross just wide of the mark in what was another tough afternoon on the shooting front.

Although Kane is a far cry from the level he set himself as last season’s top scorer and assister in the league, Spurs boss Conte says he is pleased with the talisman’s performances despite the obvious shortage of goals.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “It’s a pity for Harry [Kane]. It’s a moment, for sure, which is very strange because he’s not scoring.

“But I’m happy for his performance. The fans have to be happy for the commitment, the passion and what he put for the shirt.

“As a manager, I’m very pleased to have him in my team. For sure, at the right moment when he shoots, he scores. Now when he is shooting for one reason or another he isn’t scoring. But I’m not worried because I know he is a fantastic player.”

Kane will know more than anyone that his level is significantly lower than his stellar campaign last season.

He is getting more involved under Conte which is good and is linking up well with those around him but, hopefully, he will be able to translate his play into goals soon.
