‘A sad day for so many reasons’ – Spurs player confirms he has left the club

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has taken to Instagram to confirm that he has left the club following the expiration of his contract.

The Belgian international’s deal was supposed to conclude at the end of June, but he signed a short-term extension after the season ran longer than anticipated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 33-year-old paid tribute to the friends he has made during his time in North London along with the staff and the supporters.

It was reported that Vertonghen was not offered a new deal by the club and instead ends his eight-year association with the Champions League finalists (The Telegraph).

Some Spurs players including Harry Kane paid tribute to the former Ajax defender on social media following yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace which secured qualification into next season’s Europa League.

Vertonghen departs Tottenham having made 311 appearances in all competitions and scored fourteen goals while providing seven assists (transfermarkt).
