‘A shame’ – Some Spurs fans react to club’s loan announcement on deadline day

Some Tottenham fans on social media admitted that they feel bad for Gedson Fernandes due to the lack of opportunities he had in North London after the club confirmed that he was recalled by Benfica.

Fernandes initially arrived at Tottenham a little over a year ago on an 18-month loan spell but his time in England has been cut short, with the midfielder instead having joined Turkish giants Galatasaray.

The 22-year-old arrived at Tottenham with plenty of promise but did not get a run of consistent games to show his qualities.

The temporary suspension of the Premier League season last year due to the pandemic did not help the Portugal Under-21 international.

The fact that Jose Mourinho decided to leave him out of the Europa League squad for the group stages due to issues with fulfilling the foreign-trained player limit was an additional blow to Fernandes’ chances of getting game time.

Some Spurs fans on social media admitted that they would have liked to see more of the midfielder.

Spurs Web Opinion

One of the reasons we signed Gedson on loan is probably due to our injury issues last season. I doubt we would have signed him if Sissoko had not picked up an injury and I suspect the club never indented to activate the permanent clause in his contract.

Some Spurs fans seem to be convinced that Fernandes was simply not good enough but I do not think we saw enough of him to make that judgement. I would not be surprised if he goes on to have a successful career at the top level.
