‘A specialist’ – Thomas Tuchel explains why he wants Eric Dier from Spurs

Thomas Tuchel has shed light on why he is keen to bring Eric Dier to Bayern Munich, suggesting that the 29-year-old’s flexibility would be an asset to his side.

Six months on from Harry Kane’s switch from Tottenham to Bayern, Dier now looks set to follow his former teammate to Germany.

The England international has been a fantastic servant for Spurs since arriving as a youngster from Sporting Lisbon back in 2014 and now leaves nine-and-half-years later, having been a big part of Tottenham’s evolution as a club in that time.

According to various reports, Bayern will pay a fee of €4m (£3.4m) to Tottenham for the experienced centre-half, who is expected to finalise his switch following a medical at the Allianz Arena (Fabrizio Romano).

Eric Dier to Bayern Munich is close

Tuchel has now confirmed that Dier is on the verge of joining his side and added that the England star’s bility to play at either side of central defence, in a back three or as a number six, would come in handy.

When asked about Dier, the Bayern boss told Buli News: “He’s in Munich right now, we’re trying to sign him and finalize the deal and get another alternative for our squad. We’ll wait until everything is done because I know from experience that things can fall through at the last minute.

“Eric Dier is a specialist at centre-back. We’re getting him for the centre-back position, he can play right or left centre-back as well as in a back three. He also used to play a lot in midfield.

“We’re signing him to free up Goretzka, so he can play in midfield and doesn’t have to switch to centre-back. As for the other positions, we’ll see what happens.”

Dier would be a very good fit for Tuchel’s system. The 29-year-old has shown that he can do a great job as the central sweeper in a back three and he offers the German an opportunity to tweak his system in-game, given his experience and tactical maturity.
