Aaron Lennon names the one player he wants to see Spurs sign in January

Aaron Lennon has said that the defeat to Aston Villa was evidence that Tottenham need a top-class number nine, and called on his former club to sign Ivan Toney in January.

Tottenham fashioned a whole host of chances against Villa but were let down by some poor finishing in the final third.

The home side will argue that they also did not have the rub of the green, with Son Heung-min having three goals chopped off for offside, and with Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro hitting the woodwork.

In contrast, Ollie Watkins took his goal well to give Unai Emery’s men all three points, and Lennon believes that Ange Postecoglou’s men could have done with a player like Toney in their ranks yesterday.

Should Tottenham push for Ivan Toney in January?

The speculation linking the Brentford star with a move to Spurs shows no sign of dissipating ahead of January, with The Sun reporting just last week that the Chelsea hierarchy are convinced that they will face competition from the Lilywhites for the 27-year-old in January.

Lennon certainly thinks that the England international might be the answer to Tottenham’s problems. Here’s what the 36-year-old tweeted after Villa’s 2- win over Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Yesterday was one of those days where things did not click for us in front of goal but we do have one of the most clinical forwards in world football in our ranks in the form of Son Heung-min.

Postecoglou will continue to show faith in the South Korean as the central striker, which is why I do not expect us to spend big on Toney in January.
