‘Absolutely gutted it’s come to this’ – Spurs player reveals he has had surgery on injury

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has admitted on Instagram that he is ‘absolutely gutted’ to have had to undergo surgery on his left ankle.

The Spurs academy graduate joined Sampdoria on a season-long loan deal shortly before the summer transfer window closed, but has not been able to feature for the Serie A outfit as a result of the issue.

The 26-year-old made just 17 starts in all competitions for Tottenham last season and was seen as surplus to requirements in the summer having been left out of the club’s tour to South Korea and the subsequent pre-season fixtures.

Italian outlet Il Secolo XIX, had previously reported that Winks was due to see a specialist on Monday to determine whether surgery was necessary and would likely miss around three to four months after going under the knife.

Sampdoria have experienced a horrible start to the campaign and currently sit bottom of the table in the Italian top flight with just six points to their name from the opening fourteen matches.

Winks said in his Instagram post: “Absolutely gutted it’s come to this, I came here with the hope to give my all to this club. However after trying everything to return to playing, a persistent problem I had since the summer has resulted in surgery. Im positive the procedure went well and all my focus is on returning as soon as possible to help the team. Thanks for all the support”

Surgery comes as a massive blow for Winks, however, with the season set to go on pause for the World Cup, it is probably the right time to rectify the issue.

Winks has gone from an England international to a fringe player within a couple of years, the move to Sampdoria was supposed to rebuild his reputation and now he faces a battle to even make an appearance before the season ends.
