‘Absolutely not’ – Pundit makes big claim about Kalvin Phillips and Spurs

Darren Bent has claimed that Kalvin Phillips would have no chance of starting games for Tottenham Hotspur if he made the switch to the North London club in January.

The speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs shows no signs of dissipating as we get closer to the January transfer window.

Last week, we relayed a report from TEAMtalk, which claimed that while Newcastle were leading the race for Phillips, Tottenham had not given up their pursuit of the midfielder just yet.

The report added that Spurs could ‘touch base’ over a potential January switch for the player shortly and that the Lilywhites are the most likely club to hijack the Magpies’ pursuit of the 28-year-old.

Since then, over the last few days, both Gazzetta dello Sport  (via Sport Witness) and Football Insider have named Ange Postecoglu’s men as one of the leading contenders for the 27-year-old’s signature, alongside Newcastle and Juventus.

It has previously been reported by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold at the start of this month that Tottenham are not able to offer Phillips the guarantee of game time that he was looking for.

Would Kalvin Phillips start for Spurs?

Bent understands why that is the case, insisting that the City star is not going to keep Yves Bissouma out of the side.

When asked if Phillips would get into the Tottenham team, the pundit told talkSPORT (13 December, 17:10): The pundit replied: “Instead of Bissouma? Absolutely not. That’s Bissouma’s position. Papa Sarr’s injured so maybe there’s an option there while James Maddison’s out.

“But wherever he goes next, he cannot go there and sit on somebody’s bench. Anywhere in the Premier League, within reason, he has to be playing minutes.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Phillips would certainly not fancy his chances of getting into Spurs’ starting eleven ahead of the likes of Bissouma, Sarr and Bentancur.

The 27-year-old’s number one consideration ahead of a transfer would be getting regular game time, given that the Euros are coming up next summer. So, I cannot see Tottenham getting this deal over the line.
