Harry Kane netted a hat-trick for England yesterday evening as they demolished Montenegro to seal a place at Euro 2020 next summer.
His hat-trick took his tally to 31 goals in 44 appearances for the Three Lions thus overtaking Alan Shearer’s total and going up to sixth in the all-time list.
Former Spurs striker Gary Lineker, who is fourth on the list with 44 goals for England (full list – Goal.com), took to social media to give his take on Kane overtaking Shearer.
The Match of the Day presenter opined that the former Newcastle United man’s goals came against much tougher opposition than Kane’s did.
A first half hat trick for @HKane and he goes past @alanshearer in the list of @England goal-scorers. I would suggest, for context, that Shearer’s goals would’ve been scored against significantly stronger opposition.

Some Spurs fans were quite unhappy with Lineker’s comments and pointed out how his argument was a pointless one as Kane, just like Shearer, has scored against teams of all calibre in both friendlies and competitive matches.
Here’s how some fans responded to Lineker’s tweet:
Lineker has been very anti spurs for a few seasons now…. Pretty sure I remember shearer scoring a hat trick against the mighty Luxembourg

We play more competitive games now than before so not sure you’re correct. Also for context imagine scoring that many goals without having a Beardsley or Sheringham beside you. And then backed up by Hoddle, Gazza, Waddle, Barnes, Scholes, Beckham etc.

I’m interested to know these stronger opponents Shearer scored against ? pic.twitter.com/6MGeMxhMSI

Absolutey ridiculous tweet. Talk about support our players. 6 strong teams on this list for Shearer. Kane’s list would be 3 strong teams. Shearer 63 games and Kane 44 games. Judge teams played and goals scored once they’ve played same amount of games. pic.twitter.com/qhpAVzGuhK

Digging out a World Cup Golden Boot winner. Not sure that Shearer ever achieved the same accolade. And to think you once wore the Tottenham shirt, absolutely pathetic.

What’s this agenda against Kane you crisp packet?

Well you’ve exceeded yourself tonight with that statement, here’s a clue, ball hits back of the net goal, doesn’t matter if it’s Brazil or the Isle of Man,Kane doesn’t pick who England are going to play, what a muppet.

Another Harry kane doubter .he will go past your tally and Rooney’s with ease. Shearer was a premier league great not an England great. Before Euro 96 there were calls for Shearer to be dropped

Spurs Web Opinion
Any suggestion that Kane doesn’t score against top opposition and in important matches is demonstrably disproved by his record both for club and country. Despite being a generation talent, it still looks like Kane is not as appreciated by the country as he should be.
