‘Absolutely Pathetic’ – Some Spurs fans react angrily to Lineker’s comments on Kane

Harry Kane netted a hat-trick for England yesterday evening as they demolished Montenegro to seal a place at Euro 2020 next summer.

His hat-trick took his tally to 31 goals in 44 appearances for the Three Lions thus overtaking Alan Shearer’s total and going up to sixth in the all-time list.

Former Spurs striker Gary Lineker, who is fourth on the list with 44 goals for England (full list – Goal.com), took to social media to give his take on Kane overtaking Shearer.

The Match of the Day presenter opined that the former Newcastle United man’s goals came against much tougher opposition than Kane’s did.

Some Spurs fans were quite unhappy with Lineker’s comments and pointed out how his argument was a pointless one as Kane, just like Shearer, has scored against teams of all calibre in both friendlies and competitive matches.

Here’s how some fans responded to Lineker’s tweet:

Spurs Web Opinion

Any suggestion that Kane doesn’t score against top opposition and in important matches is demonstrably disproved by his record both for club and country. Despite being a generation talent, it still looks like Kane is not as appreciated by the country as he should be.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. I totally see where Gary Lineker is coming from, if Harry Kane is as good as you all are celebrating, then why are Spurs sitting 13th in the premiership? the main reason is Kane’s very poor contribution as a striker this season, worse than last season.

  2. Missing the point, Gary. The thing about Kane is that he is so much more than a goalscorer, and his overall
play in England games has contributed hugely against so-called ‘tougher’ opposition on many occasions (even if he
did not score in those games).
A case in point is the Spain game, away in the Nations League, last year, which propelled us into the semi finals.
Kane ran the show that night creating two goals and being involved in another, and was lauded by the Spanish press.
Kane is a great forward, bringing others into play and creating chances for them. He is not merely a goalscorer
like you and Shearer (as good as you both were), because he as a more rounded game.
