Adam Wharton update as Tottenham want to pair him with Archie Gray in midfield

Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be extremely keen on landing Adam Wharton this summer, and Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the race for the Crystal Palace star remains wide open ahead of the transfer window.

There is no doubt that additions in the middle of the park will be a priority for Spurs this summer, particularly amidst news that several of Tottenham’s midfielders face uncertain futures at the club.

One of the names thought to be at the top of the club’s wishlist is a 21-year-old midfielder who has been an absolute revelation since he arrived in the Premier League back in January of last year.

It was revealed last month by a number of sources that Tottenham are right in the thick of the race to sign Adam Wharton, who is also wanted by a whole host of clubs across the Premier League and around Europe.

It was reported recently that Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham want to pair Wharton with Archie Gray in midfield. With Lucas Bergvall signing a new six-year contract, that could make a Spurs midfield trio for years to come.

Fabrizio Romano provides Wharton transfer update

Over the last few weeks, the situation around Wharton has gone very quiet, with barely any updates on who is leading the race for the midfielder or how likely he is to leave Selhurst Park.

Fabrizio Romano has now explained why that is the case, revealing that no serious proposal has come the Eagles’ way so far. However, the journalist confirmed that the England international is indeed liked by many clubs.

When asked about the race for Wharton’s signature, Romano told GiveMeSport: “Also in this case, nothing serious yet – many clubs like him for sure, but I’m told no movements yet so far.”

Tottenham will have to break their transfer record to sign Adam Wharton

While it is unclear if the former Blackburn Rovers man will be allowed to leave Palace or which clubs are likely to make an offer for him, it is clear that the player will not come cheap.

In fact, it was reported around two weeks ago that Palace are expected to put a £100m price tag on Wharton this summer.

At that kind of price range, one would expect Tottenham Hotspur to drop out of the race and focus on other alternatives instead.
