Adebayor on a free transfer seems unlikely

Manchester City are ready to let Emmanuel Adebayor join Tottenham on a free transfer two years after spending £25m to recruit the striker from Arsenal.

That is what is being reported by the Sunday Mirror – it seems baffling that this deal could happen but apparently over the next three years Adebayor’s wages will cost City around £30m.

The 27-year-old earns £170,000-a-week which is around £100,000-a-week over Tottenham’s salary cap, so how Spurs are supposed to pay this amount seems to make this story a non starter.

  1. well we wouldnt be paying that level of wages because the non-fee would actually be paid in a lump sum to the player which would cover the wages. Basically the wages would be put within the current structure and the additional wages would be paid in the form of a direct payment so they current structure remains intact. I agree it is unlikely to come off, but would be a great bit of business IMO.

  2. Could pay him £10 mil signing on fee and pay him £70k for 2 years and he'd get the same as 2 yr contract at £170,000 per week. Or any variation on this in regards to bonuses, etc. Not saying it will happen just how it could and that's presuming we believe he is worth £10 mil.

  3. I have heard that Man City are going to let spurs have him for free as long as Adebayor waives his right to a settlement on his contract as he has not handed in a transfer request, similar to Fabregas situation. It totals a lot of money plus with the likely wage drop I guess we are going to find out how much adebayor really wants this move
