Agent confirms rumoured Spurs target is close to completing move

It looks like Tottenham are set to lose out to Fiorentina in the race for Nicolas Gonzalez, with the Stuttgart striker’s agent now confirming that he is close to completing a move to the Serie A club.

After spearheading Stuttgart’s promotion back to the Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season, Gonzalez scored 6 goals and registered 2 assists in an injury-hit season that saw him make just 15 league appearances last time out.

The Argentine was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the January transfer window (David Ornstein) and the North London club had been backed to make a move for him this summer (Gianluca Di Marzio via Fabrizio Romano).

Sky Italia reported earlier this month that Tottenham were willing to meet Stuttgart’s asking price of €25m (£21.5m) upfront with a further €4m (£3.5m) in bonuses after the German club had rejected Fiorentina’s offer, which fell short of that amount.

It was reported last week that Spurs, Fiorentina, Brighton and Leeds were fighting it out for the forward’s signature.

It now looks like Fiorentina have won the race for the 23-year-old, with Gonzalez’s agent, Jose Titolo confirming that his client has rejected advances from the Premier League in favour of a move to Florence.

Titolo told Fiorentina News: “Can we say Nicolas is a Viola player? We can certainly say we are at a very advanced stage.

“How did Nicolas react to Fiorentina’s interest? With absolute happiness.

“Right from the start, he put this possibility in front of that of moving to the Premier League.

“Our opinion is Fiorentina are emerging despite their problems.

“Fiorentina have a rich and important history and I believe they are trying to return to being the team that shone in Italy and abroad.”
