Agent reveals how close new PSG signing previously came to Spurs move

Georginio Wijnaldum’s agent has admitted that the midfielder came close to a move to Tottenham Hotspur back in 2016.

Wijnaldum left Liverpool after his contract with the Reds ran out last month and has now signed for Paris Saint-Germain, where he will be uniting with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The 30-year-old, who has been one of the stars of the Netherlands’ Euro 2020 campaign so far, leaves Anfield with a fantastic legacy and with Champions League and Premier League winner’s medals under his belt.

In hindsight, the £25m that Liverpool paid then-relegated Newcastle for the midfielder back in 2016 proved to be money well spent.

Wijnaldum’s agent, Humphry Nijman has now admitted that the midfielder could have moved to North London instead of Merseyside that summer.

Nijman revealed that his client was even at Pochettino’s house to discuss a move before eventually deciding to head to Anfield instead.

He said on the Here We Go Podcast: “Six years ago Georginio was at the house of Mr Pochettino, actually it was five years ago.

“When Gini left Newcastle Mr Pochettino was the manager of Tottenham at the time and at the time he showed an interest in Gini and they had a talk and Gini had a good feeling about it, but in the end his choice was Liverpool.”

While Liverpool signed Wijnaldum from Newcastle, we paid a higher fee to the Magpies the same summer to sign Sissoko. It is pretty clear who got the better deal between us and Liverpool, even though Sissoko’s attitude and effort during his time at the club cannot be faulted.
