Agent reports Spurs see 26-year-old as player who can ‘take them to the next level’

British football agent Haydn Dodge has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are big admirers of James Maddison as they believe that the Leicester star is the kind of player who can take them to ‘the next level’.

The speculation linking Maddison with a move to Spurs has been incessant since last summer’s transfer window (Football Insider) and the attacking midfielder served another reminder of his qualities in Leicester’s 4-1 drubbing of the Lilywhites on Saturday.

The Telegraph reported on Tuesday that Tottenham and Newcastle United hold an interest in the 26-year-old and that the Foxes have begun efforts to tie down the player to a new contract to ward off interest from the two clubs.

This was followed by on 90 min, which suggested that Antonio Conte’s men could also face competition from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for Maddison.

The publication revealed that the midfielder had turned down several of Leicester’s contract offers already and if their latest efforts to tie him down are unsuccessful, he will be leaving the King Power Stadium in the summer.

Dodge has now said that the England international has been a long-term target for Spurs but suggested that their decision on whether to pursue the midfielder could depend on the formation they plan on employing next season.

The agent told CaughtOffSide: “When it comes to a midfielder, they’ve been tracking Leicester’s James Maddison for a long time. They see him as the type of player capable of taking them to the next level but I guess it hinges on whether or not they want to play three or four at the back.”

The only way that Maddison can fit into Conte’s set-up is if the Italian chooses to deploy a 3-5-2, which I do not see him doing as that would mean that he will not be able to field three forwards.

However, if Conte is replaced by Pochettino, I suspect the Argentine will be keen to sign a player of Maddison’s profile as he will fit naturally into the 50-year-old’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
