Agent thinks Tottenham-linked player will stay at current club this summer

Alex Meret’s agent Federico Pastorello has said that he expects the rumoured Tottenham target to remain at Napoli next season.

Over the past few weeks and months, a whole host of goalkeepers have been mooted as potential replacements for Hugo Lloris, with Alex Meret being one of them.

The latest report linking the Italian with a move to Spurs came from NapoliCalcioLive, who claimed two weeks ago that the Lilywhites were ready to put €40m (£34.8m) on the table for the 26-year-old.

The publication explained that Meret enters the final year of his contract this June and even though Napoli have the option to extend it by another year, they might not take it up and could instead decide to cash in on him.

It was asserted that a big offer would be ‘too tempting’ for the Serie A champions to turn down, with club said to have already identified Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario and Bari’s Elia Caprile as potential replacements for their number one.

However, Pastorello has now played down the chances of the goalkeeper leaving the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this summer.

He told Tuttomercatoweb: “Director (Cristiano) Giuntoli made a huge effort for the contract renewal, which was very complicated. Now, the season is over and there will be holidays.

“And then, we’ll see. But Alex is very happy to be in Naples. He wants to stay in Naples and I think he will.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There has been nothing to suggest that Meret was ever really anywhere near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist to replace Lloris.

Most of the speculation seemed to come from obscure Italian outlets and it is quite possible that the goalkeeper’s representatives fed the information to the press to strengthen their position during the contract negotiations with Napoli.
