Ajax confirm transfer fee they have paid for Steven Bergwijn

Ajax have confirmed that the deal they agreed with Tottenham Hotspur over Steven Bergwijn is worth €31.25m (£26.4m).

Spurs officially confirmed today that they had reached an agreement with Ajax over the sale of Bergwijn, two and a half years after signing the winger from PSV Eindhoven.

The winger took to Instagram to thank Tottenham fans for their support, and described playing for the club as ‘an honour’.

It was initially reported by Fabrizio Romano that the fee agreed between the two clubs for Bergwijn was expected to be in the region of €30m (£25.8m), which also the same figure reported by De Telegraaf earlier this week.

However, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij took to social media on Tuesday to state that Ajax had actually agreed to pay €32.5m (£27.8m) for the 24-year-old.

The Eredivisie giants have now confirmed that the deal they have agreed for Bergwijn in worth €31.25m (£26.4m). The club revealed that it would be a fixed transfer fee without any add-ons.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs have done well to recoup the entirety of the fee they paid to sign Bergwijn from PSV two and a half years ago.

However, I wonder if it would have been smarter to sell Bergwijn for around £20m and insist on a 25 per cent sell-on clause.

I think there is a very good chance that Bergwijn will explode in the Eredivisie, and be sold for around £40m in two years.
