Ajax discuss possibility of letting Tottenham target move in January

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be long-term admirers of Dutch youngster Frenkie de Jong.

The Ajax midfielder caught Spurs’ eye in the transfer window just gone, during which the club apparently offered £45m for the player.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are both said to also be interested, and it will take some Daniel Levy cunning to steal away the young talent from such heavyweights.

De Jong made his breakthrough in the 2016/17 season, becoming a more established regular in this season following.

This campaign, he has started nine of Ajax’s ten games.

The midfielder also now made his Dutch debut.

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has discussed the possibility of a January transfer move for the likes of de Jong.

He told AS: “Barcelona can return in January if they want, but no player will leave.”

Tottenham have a good relationship when it comes to Ajax purchases, as Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez were all bought from the club.

Spurs will be hoping that this could help them seal a deal with Ajax, but it seems that the Dutch giants will be unwilling to sell their prize asset until at least next summer.
