Tottenham Hotspur would have been looking to replicate their performance in the first leg against Manchester City at the new Spurs stadium last night, however, they fell far short.
Spurs started the game sluggishly, handing Ajax an early opening goal just 15 minutes in, as Donny Van de Beek collected a through ball and slotted it calmly past Lloris.
With the away goal conceded, Spurs faced an uphill challenge to claw something back out of the game, and didn’t really take control until Moussa Sissoko was introduced.
Unfortunately, this came at the sacrifice of Jan Vertonghen, after the Belgian centre back suffered a nasty collision to the head and was forced off with a concussion.
Tottenham have since revealed that Vertonghen has undergone checks today, and will continue to be assessed over the coming days, including a trip to a neurologist.
As a former Ajax player, the Dutch side tweeted out a nice message to Vertoghen after he was subbed off.
A forced end to this game for Vertonghen, who leaves the pitch under applause from fans from both sides. Sissoko replaces him.
