Ajax send message to Vertonghen ahead of Champions League tie

Tottenham Hotspur will host Ajax Amsterdam in less than a week at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Both teams will clash in a historic first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

The Lilywhites managed to overcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in a dramatic second-leg quarterfinal performance on away goals.

Maurico Pochettino’s side will now play at the final four of the prestigious European competition for the first time in their history.

The tie will mark a happy return for some of Spurs’ players. Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Christian Eriksen have all played for the Dutch giants in the past.

It will, therefore, probably be a very sentimental game for all four ex-Ajax players.

Some of them have taken to social media to express their excitement. Toby Alderweireld on his Twitter account posted this.

However, the man in the middle of this exhilaration seems to be Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian celebrated his 32nd birthday yesterday and received a lovely message from his former club.

The defender joined the AFC Ajax youth academy in 2003. He then went on to feature 155 times for the Dutch side at senior level, netting 23 goals in his six-year stay in the Netherlands.
