Alan Hutton claims Spurs man has ‘lost his way’ after Vitesse Arnhem defeat

Alan Hutton has claimed that Dele Alli has lost his way at Tottenham after the midfielder’s lacklustre display in the defeat against Vitesse yesterday.

After struggling for game time for much of last season under Jose Mourinho, Alli was linked with a move away from the club in the summer.

The midfielder ended up staying put at Tottenham and it seemed as though he had found a new lease of life under Nuno Espirito Santo as he started the campaign in fine form, thriving in a deeper role in Tottenham’s first three matches of the season.

However, his form subsequently dipped as he has lost his place in the starting eleven to Tanguy Ndombele.

The England international got an opportunity to prove himself in the Europa Conference League against Vitesse yesterday, with Nuno making eleven changes to the starting eleven.

Alli struggled to impose himself on the game and was a passenger for large parts of the encounter a the home side emerged deserved 1-0 winners.

Speaking about the 25-year-old’s performance in Holland, Hutton told Sky Sports News (21/20/21 – 19:45 onwards): “Very quiet. He was very, very quiet. I think he is a fantastic player. He has maybe lost his way a little bit.

“But he really needs to build on his previous years, to hit those heights because we know he can. But tonight, he was very quiet.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given Tanguy Ndombele’s performances over the last couple of games, Alli certainly faces an uphill battle to force himself into Nuno’s starting eleven.

Performances like the one yesterday will not help his cause. However, it is unfair to focus only on the 25-year-old as I thought the likes of Lo Celso and Bergwijn were just as poor.
