Alan Hutton has admitted Spurs player he doubted has proven him wrong

Alan Hutton has admitted that he doubted whether Eric Dier could cut it as a central defender at Tottenham Hotspur.

Dier has started in the heart of the defence in six of Tottenham’s eight games this season after becoming one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s team sheet (transfermarkt).

Hutton was fearful that the 26-year-old could suffer from a lack of pace, but has been proven wrong over Dier’s move from midfield.

Mourinho is known to hold Dier in high regard and was keen to take him to Old Trafford while he was in charge at Manchester United (Daily Mail).

Dier has looked comfortable at the back for Tottenham this season and can consider himself unlucky to have been awarded a penalty against him during the recent match at home to Newcastle which ended up costing his side all three points.

“He’s really fancied Dier this season,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“I think he’s played really well. I was a bit sceptical of him as a centre-half, I didn’t think he had the pace but he’s playing really well.

“It looks like he wants someone to partner him. They have got other options there, there are other players there who are international players that they can turn to. I don’t think it’s such a bad thing.”
