Alan Hutton suggests 21-year-old Spurs target could thrive in Conte’s system

Alan Hutton has claimed that rumoured Tottenham target Djed Spence is ready to make the step up to the Premier League and backed the youngster to thrive under Antonio Conte in North London.

Tottenham were not successful in their attempts to sign a right wing-back during the January transfer window (The Athletic).

Spence, who has excelled on loan at Nottingham Forest, was one of the players that the Lilywhites were reportedly after, with 90min claiming that Antonio Conte’s men saw a £12m offer for the 21-year-old knocked back by Middlesbrough at the end of January.

The Northern Echo claimed last week that Spurs could face competition from Liverpool and their North London rivals Arsenal for the Championship starlet in the summer.

Hutton believes that Spence could thrive in the wing-back role under Conte and believes that a move to Spurs would be the right one for the Boro academy product.

When asked about Spurs’ interest in Spence, the former Tottenham right-back told Football Insider: “We know Tottenham are a massive club with an elite manager now.

“He’ll be looking to stamp his own style on this side within the next transfer window. Spence is a boy who has come through and looks ready for the next level, in my opinion. He’s been incredible for Forest.

“There’s a chance within that Spurs team, with the formation and system they play, for someone to really go ahead and thrive.

“Sessegnon and Doherty have been playing well, and we saw that against Leeds – but Conte will want to strengthen. Spence massively fits the bill for Conte and that system, there’s no doubt.”

I would personally prefer to see us go for Tariq Lamptey over Spence, even though the Brighton man would likely be more expensive. Lamptey would be more of a guarantee than the Boro youngster since he has a couple of years of Premier League experience under his belt.
