Alan Shearer claims Spurs star wasted chance on international duty

Tottenham Hotspur had a number of first-team stars called up to various international squads for friendlies and qualifiers over the past week.

This included three Lilywhites being called up to the Three Lions in the form of Harry Kane, Harry Winks, and Danny Rose.

While Winks did not feature in the 2-1 loss to the Czech Republic on Friday, Kane and Rose both started the match, with the former netting England’s goal from the spot.

However, Danny Rose had nothing short of a nightmare in the EURO 2020 qualifier, as England succumbed to their first loss and first dropped points of the campaign.

Rose repeatedly gave the ball away, was caught out of position, picked up a yellow card, and was perhaps lucky not to give away a penalty and earn a possible red later in the game.

England legend, Alan Shearer, has now claimed that some player, including Rose, should have seen the international match as a chance to go in fresh and put their club results behind them. Unfortunately, Danny did not do this.

Shearer said (Sun): “You could make a case for Friday’s team being a surprise, as four of the back five are going through a tough spell.

“Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane with Everton, Harry Maguire with Manchester United and Danny Rose with Tottenham. You look at their form and their club results and they weren’t exactly bouncing going into the international break.

“Perhaps you would like to think they could go in fresh and look at it as an opportunity but clearly they didn’t do that. I fully expect changes at the back and maybe even in the formation.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I agree with Shearer here. When you look at the likes of Sonny, Kane, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Foyth, and more, many Spurs players have put Tottenham’s poor results behind them to achieve positive outcomes with their national sides. It would have been nice to see Rose do the same.
