Alan Shearer explains why he thinks Spurs have a chance in the top four race

Alan Shearer has argued that Tottenham Hotspur cannot be written off in the race for Champions League qualification, given that they have two world-class players up front in Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

It was Tottenham’s deadly strike duo that made the difference against Brighton this week, with Son producing a memorable strike to open the scoring for the home side before Kane got the match-winner in the second half.

The performance from the Lilywhites left a lot to be desired, with Brighton controlling proceedings for much of the game.

However, Cristian Stellini’s men did defend resolutely and took the chances that came their way.

The result keeps Spurs within touching distance of both Newcastle United and Manchester United, who are both three points ahead of the North Londoners with a game in hand.

Shearer was impressed with the quality of Tottenham’s two goals, even though he suggested that Roberto De Zerbi’s men were unlucky to come away with nothing from the game.

The Newcastle legend told Match of the Day: “When you have got those two, especially Harry Kane up top, then you have a chance.

“Brighton had more possession, more shots, more shots on target and more corners. They were unlucky.

“With those two, that’s why they have got a chance of being in the top four. Son hasn’t had his best season – it’s a fantastic strike for his 100th Premier League goal. It’s not a bad way to do it, is it?!

“The goalkeeper has got no chance. He picks a spot and gets it absolutely spot on. It’s a wonderful strike.”

On Kane’s goal, the pundit remarked: “It’s good work from Hojbjerg, he looks up and picks Kane out. Again, a fantastic strike. He strikes it really well – those two bring so much to that team.”

Now would be a good time for Son to have one of his typical purple patches in front of goal, which he has not had so far this season.

The South Korean is very much a confidence player and his strike on Saturday will give him plenty of belief going into the final run-in.
