Alan Shearer makes heartbreaking prediction for James Maddison and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alan Shearer has predicted that James Maddison might miss out on the England squad for the European Championship this summer.

Maddison had an outstanding start to his Tottenham career, arguably being one of the best players across the Premier League in the first few months of the campaign.

However, since returning from his extended injury layoff a couple of months ago, the attacking midfielder has not been able to recapture the same sort of form.

His poor form might also have to do with Tottenham’s struggles as a team over the last few months, with opposition teams becoming better at stifling Ange Postecoglou’s system and not affording the Lilywhites’s attackers much space or time in the final third.

Will James Maddison make the England Euros squad?

Madison has been a fixture in recent England squads and came off the bench to make a decisive impact in the Three Lions’ last encounter – their 2-2 draw against Belgium last month.

However, Shearer believes that the Tottenham man and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold may end out missing out on a plane ticket to Germany.

The Newcastle legend told The Rest Is Football podcast: “I don’t see it as that straightforward. If it’s a squad of 26 he (Trent) has a much better chance. If it’s a squad of 23 then I think he may struggle to get in. Maybe not Madders, either.”

Maddison is not going to start for England, given the form of Jude Bellingham but I am sure that he will be in the squad. The Spurs star offers something different to the other options in the squad, which is why Southgate will be keen to have him on the bench.
