Alan Shearer names two Tottenham players in his first Team of the Week

Newcastle United legend and the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, Alan Shearer, has included Tottenham Hotspur duo Dejan Kulusevski and Ryan Sessegnon in his first Team of the Week of the season.

Tottenham ran away to a 4-1 win against Southampton in the opening game of their league campaign after initially going behind in the match.

Kulusevski and Sessegnon were integral to the victory as each produced one of their finest performances in a Spurs shirt against the Saints.

The Lilywhites duo combined for Tottenham’s opening goal, which set the tone for the remainder of the fixture. Kulusevski’s cross to the back post was nodded past Gavin Bazunu by a late-arriving Sessegnon to level the scoring on the day.

Sessegnon showed no signs of nervousness after Spurs added to his competition at left-wing-back by bringing in Ivan Perisic on a free transfer.

Kulusevski, on the other hand, picked up from where he left off last season as he added yet another goal and an assist to his name.

Shearer praised Sessegnon for taking up the challenge posed by Perisic by showcasing his qualities with a well-rounded display.

The former England international also hailed Kulusevski for his decisiveness in front of goal as he helped his side to a convincing victory over the Saints.

Speaking to the Premier League, Shearer gave his view on Sessegnon’s display: “Scored with a great header and produced a solid all-round performance as he stole an early march on Ivan Perisic in the battle for the starting spot at left wing-back.”

The Hall of Fame inductee also provided his thoughts on Kulusevski’s performance: “A superb opening day for the winger and his team, continuing his excellent form from the end of last season with another goal and assist.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is good to see that Sessegnon and Kulusevski have not shown any rustiness after being thrown back into competitive action following the break. We are set to travel to Stamford Bridge to face off against Chelsea this weekend and having Sessegnon and Kulusevski at their best would increase our chances of getting a good result at the cost of our London rivals.
