Alasdair Gold admits he is ‘surprised’ to see one manager being linked with Spurs

Alasdair Gold has admitted that he was surprised when he heard that Steve Cooper is one of the candidates on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte at the helm.

Multiple reports over the last two weeks have suggested that the search for Antonio Conte’s replacement is now well underway, with Fabio Paratici having been asked to compile a list of managers who could succeed the Italian (Daily Mail).

One of those names is alleged to be Cooper, with GiveMeSport suggesting earlier this month the Welsh manager is not just on Tottenham’s radar but could also be the subject of interest from the likes of Chelsea, West Ham United and Southampton.

Meanwhile, The Athletic also claimed last week that the 43-year-old has a few admirers among the Tottenham hierarchy on the back of the job he has done since taking over at the City Ground 18 months ago.

Cooper distanced himself from the speculation linking him with the Tottenham job, telling The Independent on March 9 that he is fully focused on Forest.

When asked about the former Swansea City boss’ name being linked with the Spurs hot seat, Gold said on last week’s episode of Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “They (Forest) played some decent football.

“I don’t think Steve Cooper, for some reason he was thrown into the managerial mix and linked with Spurs, I thought that was an interesting one.

“Yeah, I was surprised that he was linked with the Spurs job and I don’t think this was the best audition on (last) Saturday.”

Cooper is not likely to be anywhere near the top of Paratici’s wishlist as the jury is out on whether he would be able to cope with the pressure of a big job where the expectations are a lot higher.

If Tottenham do decide to look within the Premier League for Conte’s replacement, I believe they should look no further than Roberto De Zerbi, who looks set to reach the very top of the game over the coming years.
