Alasdair Gold backs Spurs to make further approach for target in January

Football.Lodon’s Alasdair Gold has backed Tottenham Hotspur to make another enquiry about Milan Skriniar when the January transfer window reopens.

The Inter Milan man was reportedly Jose Mourinho’s first-choice centre-back target during the transfer window.

It looked at one point as if the deal was extremely close, with Tottenham’s technical performance director Steve Hitchen even being spotted in Italy with Skriniar’s agent (Gianluca Di Marzio).

However, the North Londoners were not able to agree on a deal with Inter before last Monday’s transfer deadline, with reports indicating that Spurs were not willing to meet the Serie A club’s asking price (Fabrizio Romano).

Reports in Italy have since revealed that Tottenham made a last-ditch bid worth around €40m plus a further €5m for the Slovakian international and that Inter would have accepted the offer if it had arrived a few days earlier (FC Inter News via Sport Witness).

However, Antonio Conte’s side reportedly turned it down since they did not have enough time to secure a replacement for the centre-back.

When asked by a fan in a Q and A if Tottenham will go back in for Skriniar in January, Gold responded: “I’d be surprised if an enquiry isn’t made in January but much depends on his position at Inter.

“The Slovakian wanted to come to Spurs but if he’s playing every week and the Italian club do not want to let him go then it’s going to be tough to prise Skriniar away.”
