Alasdair Gold claims defender has ‘absolutely failed’ to impress Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur are currently prepared to listen to offers for Djed Spence after he has failed to make an impression on new head coach Ange Postecoglou, according to Alasdair Gold.

Spence joined Tottenham in the summer of 2022 with Antonio Conte admitting at the time that Spence was a ‘club’ signing rather than his own, having moved to North London from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £20million dependent on add-ons (talkSPORT).

Conte said at the time: “Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it.

“I said ‘OK, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us’. The club decided to buy him.”

Spence had only managed to make four appearances in Tottenham colours last season to the tune of just 30 minutes of game time before the club allowed him to see out the remainder of the season on loan at French outfit Rennes during the January transfer window (transfermarkt).

Gold has revealed that the only interest to date in Spence’s services has come from clubs in the Championship and a loan exit is the most likely outcome for the right wing-back.

Djed Spence has failed to impress Ange Postecoglou

He told his YouTube channel: “Djed Spence, Spurs will listen to any offers for Spence. He’s absolutely failed to impress Postecoglou.

“He’s not going to play this season unless there are injuries. The only interest thus far has come from the Championship for Djed.

“I guess it’s up to him whether he takes a step down to the league below. I think Spurs have to accept a loan because I don’t think they’re going to get a fee anywhere near what they paid for him right now.

“They maybe just have to get a loan, do well in the Championship, build himself back up.

“I guess this will be a good test of whether Djed is just comfortable sitting around at a Premier League club or whether he will be happy to go back to the Championship and kind of reboot, start again and show everyone what he can do.”

Spence was not included in the squad for either of Tottenham’s first two Premier League matches with the Australian preferring to utilise Emerson Royal and Pedro Porro on the right side.

Porro’s performance against Manchester United last weekend went some way to reinforce his way to be part of Postecoglou’s plans and prove he can operate in the system expected of him, which certainly ended any glimmer of hope Spence may have held of forcing his way into a bench spot.
