Alasdair Gold claims some at the club felt one player was ‘underrated’ by Spurs hierarchy

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that some at Tottenham felt that Hugo Lloris did not receive the respect he deserved in the build-up to his most recent contract extension.

Lloris has been a fantastic servant for Spurs since first arriving at the club from Lyon back in 2011, having played 443 times for Tottenham.

Although the Frenchman does not have a medal to show for his time at the North London club, he has been a key figure for the Lilywhites at a time when they established themselves as part of the ‘big six’.

The Tottenham captain has shown some signs of decline this season and multiple outlets have reported over the last few months that Spurs are expected to sign his successor when the transfer window reopens in the summer (Daily Mail).

While writing about the potential contenders to replace Lloris in his column for Football.London, Gold has now discussed the goalkeeper’s time at Spurs and how some at the club feel he has not been given the deserved respect.

The journalist points out at the 36-year-old had to almost wait until his entire contract ran out before finally penning a two-year contract extension last year.

Gold reveals that it was a ‘bone of contention’ with Spurs at the time as many felt that the captain was underrated by the club’s hierarchy even though he was held in high regard by the various managers he has had in N17.

Alasdair Gold wrote: ‘That Lloris had to almost see out the long six-year deal he signed in 2016 until he got a new one was a bone of contention within Spurs, with some feeling the captain was always underrated by the club’s hierarchy even if most of the managers during his decade rated him highly.’

Spurs Web Opinion

Lloris has undoubtedly been one of the best goalkeepers in the world over the last decade and he does not get the respect he deserves from Premier League fans.

Goalkeepers can often be the most difficult to judge as their job is primarily about consistency. So, one needs to watch them in action week in, week out to get a sense of how good they are.

Non-Spurs fans, who only watch Lloris in action on rare occasions and see the highlights of some of his high-profile mistakes, tend to think he is error-prone.

However, most Tottenham fans will tell you that the Frenchman has been a rock and has saved a lot of points over the years with his incredible reflexes and shot-stopping ability.
