Alasdair Gold claims Spurs are ‘playing down’ Maddison links – Adds one ‘massive caveat’

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed Tottenham are currently playing down speculation linking them with a transfer for Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

Bringing in six new players for Antonio Conte’s squad, Spurs have moved quickly to get the bulk of their business done well before the start of the new campaign.

With most of their attention expected to turn towards dealing with offloading unwanted players, they still remain in the market for the addition of a creative midfielder (Evening Standard).

Gold claimed last month that Spurs have long held an interest in Leicester’s Maddison to fill the void but admitted a deal would be difficult to complete after he enjoyed another strong season with the Foxes (Football.London).

The journalist has since given an updated view on the position of the 25-year-old and while stating Spurs are distancing themselves from the rumours, he believes they could pursue a transfer if a deal is possible.

Gold told his YouTube channel (56:51): “Interestingly, Spurs are really playing that down [transfer links to Maddison]. Anyone we asked out on the tour about Maddison really played that down. So no, nothing happening there.

“It’s a difficult one. I said earlier in the summer that I knew that he was on their long list of potential attacking midfielders in recent years.

“They like him. They chased him before he went to Leicester as well, they like Maddison. [He only has] two years left on his contract as well.

“I’d say for the moment don’t get too excited but adding a massive caveat – and I’m going very much against what Spurs are saying – if he were to become available, if that was a deal that could be done, I think that Spurs would make a move.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have been missing that attacking midfielder for a couple of seasons now and someone like Maddison would be a very suitable profile to fill that position.

If Leicester do show signs that they are willing to part ways with him, Spurs should definitely get involved in the conversation but they need to be aware that he won’t come cheap.
