Alasdair Gold has said that, as things stand, Brendan Rodgers is not one of the leading candidates to take over at Tottenham.
Since Rodgers’ sacking by Leicester City, there has been plenty of speculation about Spurs potentially approaching the Northern Irishman regarding replacing Antonio Conte at the helm.
Football Insider claimed earlier this week that the 50-year-old is looking like the right fit for Spurs and that there is a ‘good chance’ the Lilywhites will move for him in the summer.
The report explained that Daniel Levy has been a long-time admirer of Rodgers, with the Spurs chairman said to have first tried to hire him over a decade ago when he was in charge of Swansea City.
The publication asserted that Tottenham are now in the process of contacting the former Liverpool boss.
However, Gold has now suggested that Rodgers is not near the top of Spurs’ wishlist at the moment but he added that things could change over the coming months.
When asked about the speculation linking the recently departed Leicester head coach to the Tottenham hotseat, the journalist said in a Q&A on Football.London: “I don’t think he’s a top candidate at the moment from what I understand.
“Again, like I said on Gallardo below, who knows how the search shakes up after those chaotic 76 days of 2021 but for now I don’t think he’s a name near the top of Tottenham’s list.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Even if Levy and the Spurs board are convinced that Rodgers would be a good fit, the move would not sit well with the Tottenham fan base and would perhaps be perceived as an unambitious appointment.
So, the optics around it would likely prevent the North Londoners from seriously considering a move for the 50-year-old.
