Alasdair Gold explains the benefits of Spurs waiting to appoint new manager

Alasdair Gold has suggested that Tottenham are likely to have a lot more managerial candidates to choose from if they wait until the summer.

Spurs’ announcement on Sunday that Cristian Stellini will take charge as interim head coach until the end of the season, with Ryan Mason as his assistant, did not sit well with some Tottenham fans who felt that it was tantamount to writing the season off.

The Lilywhites have been linked with a whole host of coaches so far, including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank, Oliver Glasner and others (The Athletic).

However, reports over recent days have indicated that Julian Nagelsmann has now emerged as the club’s top target after he parted ways with Bayern (Football Insider).

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Tuesday that Spurs have narrowed down their shortlist to four or five candidates and are expected to announce the appointment in the summer.

While Gold pointed out that the Tottenham hierarchy would not want a repeat of what happened in 2021, they are likely to have a bigger pool of managers to choose from by waiting until the end of the season.

The journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “The one benefit of delaying their decision, despite it sparking the potential of another long search if things don’t go to plan, is that there are going to be a lot of candidates available in the summer if Spurs pursue them aggressively.

“There’s also going to be a lot of top vacancies available across the top leagues I reckon.

“With Spurs, Nagelsmann will tick a lot of boxes and they seriously considered him twice before so he will be high on their list.

“He will also need time to decompress after the way his Bayern time suddenly ended.

“I wouldn’t rule out Pochettino yet because this extra time may well decide what the inside of the club looks like with Paratici’s future.

“We know the Argentine is not the biggest fan of the sporting director set-up. I don’t think it’s as cut and dried as if Tottenham want Pochettino then he returns right now.

“The likes of De Zerbi, Glasner, Amorim, Conceicao, Slot, Frank and Postecoglou are all likely to be more willing to discuss any potential move in the summer as well, not to mention the other free agents on the market like Enrique, who Paratici is a big fan of, and Zidane.

“It’s a frustrating wait but as long as Spurs don’t repeat the farcical summer of 2021 then they will have plenty of candidates to choose from.”

Most top managers would want to start with a pre-season in order to get their ideas across to the squad and thus would not have been open to taking the job now.

The priority for the Spurs hierarchy should be getting the best man for the job.

If that means waiting until the summer, that is obviously the right thing to do.
