Alasdair Gold explains why Spurs snubbed loan offers for youngsters

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur turned down multiple offers for some of their academy players on deadline day.

The players involved in interest from other clubs were not disclosed by Gold who explained that the reason the deals got rejected was to ensure they have the relevant squad depth for involvement in the Papa John’s Trophy, the Premier League 2 and to ‘back up’ the first-team squad in the Europa Conference League.

Spurs’ Development Squad beat Stevenage 4-3 in the Papa John’s Trophy last night.

In the Europa Conference specifically, Spurs have fielded some of their younger players with Dane Scarlett, Nile John, J’Neil Bennett, and Maksim Paskotsi all having taken to the field in the competition so far.

Bennett was one player that Spurs were prepared to allow to head out on loan, having joined Crewe until January.

On deadline day, Spurs announced the arrival of right-back Emerson Royal; the fifth and final signing of Tottenham’s window.

Spurs have already had a few senior players leave the club this summer with Paulo Gazzaniga, Toby Alderweirld, Erik Lamela, Joe Hart, Danny Rose, Juan Foyth, Moussa Sissoko and Serge Aurier all departing the club in the summer transfer window.

This clearly suggests that Nuno believes in the academy squad, which is a good thing. It also means that the Europa Conference will see young players get minutes which is an interesting prospect.

Spurs haven’t used the loan market, excluding Oliver Skipp, for a while in my opinion. So it will be telling if the young players develop well through staying at the club.
