Alasdair Gold gives his take on Bergwijn situation and his ‘strange’ relationship with Conte

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has described Steven Bergwijn’s relationship with Antonio Conte as a ‘strange one’.

Bergwijn has made it clear that he wants to leave Tottenham this summer in search of regular game time after warming the bench for much of the season (AD).

Ajax are said to have had an offer of around £15m rejected by Spurs for the winger last week and are now thought to be readying a second bid worth around £20m including add-ons (The Daily Mirror).

Gold has now explained that Bergwijn’s exit from North London this summer is inevitable despite Conte believing that the Dutchman has the ability to be an asset for the club.

The journalist claimed that Conte saw the winger as being a backup striker to Harry Kane or Son Heung-min’s replacement on the left, which meant that the Netherlands international hardly played when both of them were fit.

Gold also explained there is a sense at Tottenham that the 24-year-old took his frustrations regarding a lack of game time to heart instead of increasing his effort when left out of the side like Matt Doherty.

Finally, he added that while Ajax are ‘desperate’ to snap up Bergwijn, they would have to get close to the £27m fee that Spurs paid to sign the wide man from PSV Eindhoven two and a half years ago.

Spurs Web Opinion

Bergwijn has not had a run of consecutive starts to show Conte what he can do. However, given the attacking talent at the Italian’s disposal, the Dutchman cannot have too many complaints.

I expect Bergwijn’s sale to Ajax to progress quickly over the coming days and weeks as all three parties would want to get the deal done as early as possible.
